A pilot procurement scheme has meant that between four and six hours per week per ward of clinicians’ time has been returned to front-line activity.

Officials from the HSE and St Vincent’s University Hospital are due to appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children on Thursday to discuss procurement practices, following the revelations revealed last week on Prime Time by the RTÉ Investigations Unit.

A review by the Comptroller and Auditor-General (C&AG) has identified a significant level of non-compliance with procurement rules first introduced in 2002 in relation to the HSE’s 2013 expenditure, partly blamed on the lack of a single national financial and procurement system.
