GPs need to become more innovative and find new ways to deliver care

GPs should be reimbursed for taking time to take part in integration work aimed at fostering better links between GPs and hospital clinicians and improving patient care in the community, a conference has heard.

It was all very well to say GPs should do x, y and z but primary care needed resources, an impassioned ICGP CEO Kieran Ryan told delegates of the Primary Care Partnership conference last week.

The Minister for Health and the Minister with responsibility for Primary Care both snubbed invitations to attend the National Association of General Practitioners (NAGP) organised Primary Care Partnership Conference held at Glenroyal Hotel in Maynooth, Co Kildare, from Thursday to Friday as an add-on the Association’s AGM on the Saturday, opting instead to attend other arguably less high-profile events.

The results of large patient panels have been poor access for patients, inconsistent quality, lack of time to build relationships with patients and clinician burnout, the Primary Care Partnership Conference in Maynooth has heard.
