Some 69 doctors, comprising members of the Hospital Board of Midlands Regional Hospital at Portlaoise, the Laois Faculty of the ICGP and MIDOC, have set out their shared vision of the future for services for the hospital, which opposes the HSE’s proposal to remove acute services, which the medics claim would be a return to “past mistakes”.

Consideration will be given as to what services should be provided in Portlaoise Hospital and what services could be provided elsewhere, prior to any decision on the hospital’s future, the Minister for Health has said, following a draft Dublin Midlands Hospital Group plan for clinical service delivery at Portlaoise.

A “plan of action” on the role of Portlaoise Hospital will be ready in September, following consultation with staff, GPs and other hospitals including Naas, Tallaght and Tullamore.
