The way the plethora of pain assessment tools now available are used in patients dying of dementia has not been sufficiently explored, a conference in Dublin has heard.

A number of awards were made as part of the recent World Research Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) event held at UCD.

While compassion and a healthy level of empathy with patients are important for healthcare professionals, putting patients first can open nurses up to ‘compassion fatigue’, attendees at the World Research Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care at UCD were told.

The effectiveness and tolerability of buprenorphine for treating cancer pain was discussed at the World Research Congress of the European Association of Palliative Care meeting in Dublin by Dr Mark Taubert, Consultant in Palliative Medicine and Clinical Lead for Palliative Care, Velindre Cancer Centre in Wales.

Ireland has been ranked among Europe’s top five countries for palliative care development, which also included the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden.
