I know every doctor, in fact most people, would have heard of Louis Pasteur. Most people know of him because of the technique of ‘pasteurisation’ which bears his name. This heating technique kills bacteria in milk and wine, although it is rarely used now in wine making. Pastuer’s ideas lead to the germ theory: that tiny organisms could cause disease. Pasteur was a polymath who demonstrated knowledge in biology, microbiology and chemistry, but I didn’t know, until recently, that he started life as an artist.
