Greater ethical basis for legal abortion needed

Dear Editor, Given the strong fears of some IMT readers (“doctors have no special skills in predicting suicidality,” wrote Dr Patrick Riordan in his letter to IMT on June 28, http://bit.ly/14dS02z), of politicians (Lucinda Creighton, Dana Rosemary Scallon, etc) and of some doctors surrounding the proposed legislation (the recent doubts raised by Dr Sam Coulter Smith of the Rotunda Hospital, and the wide variety of public expression of current best medical evidence), perhaps the necessity to include risk of suicide in proposed legislation for abortion should be amended.
