Retention not recruitment is key problem

IMO Vice President Dr Matthew Sadlier has described the fact that 50 per cent of last year’s interns — some 270 doctors — did not stay in Ireland as a “shocking” indictment of HSE policy in the area of NCHD manpower planning. The IMO is calling for the Executive to reform its unsatisfactory recruitment policies over the past year in favour of pursuing a retention strategy, and for the Minister for Health to take “appropriate action” against the responsible managers in the HSE who do not provide “honest and transparent information” when recruiting doctors from non-EU countries.…
