Lithuanian surgeon for EU health commissioner job

President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker has proposed Vytenis Andriukaitis, former Health Minister of Lithuania, as the new European Commissioner for the Health Policy and Food Safety portfolio. A surgeon and historian, Andriukaitis is currently a member of the Lithuanian parliament, having started his political career in the anti-Soviet underground. His medical career saw him specialise in cardiac surgery, including working as a surgeon from 1985-1993 at the Heart Surgery Centre at Republican Clinical Hospital in Vilnius.
