GP fellowship programme launched

The HSE Medical Education and Training (MET) Unit has formally established the National General Practice Academic Clinical Fellowship Programme, which aims to support the professional development of future leaders of academic general practice. The move is a response to the weaknesses identified in the previous HSE/ICGP Senior Registrar Scheme. A 2010 HSE review of that scheme, which has provided training opportunities for GPs with an interest in academic medicine for more than a decade, highlighted its strengths but recommended changes to ensure sustainability and expansion of the scope and numbers of posts available.
