Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the gastrointestinal tract. This term encompasses ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and unclassified IBD. The aetiology of IBD is multifactorial. Genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of this condition. There are a number of extra-intestinal manifestations; metabolic bone disease being an important consideration in each patient.
