Researchers from Cork presented details of the first case of aquagenic pruritus to be successfully treated with omalizumab at the EADV Congress in Vienna recently. According to the authors O’Connor R et al., aquagenic pruritus is a rare skin condition characterised by intense itch, burning or stinging sensation after contact with water without visible skin changes. The pathogenesis is unknown. Antihistamines are the mainstay of treatment, but other reported therapeutic options include UVB phototherapy, sodium bicarbonate baths, PUVA.
