Moderately low vitamin D serum levels are common in the winter months in all populations in Northern Europe. A major part of our vitamin D supply comes from sunlight exposure, so people with darker skin types and those who avoid the sun for medical, cultural or personal reasons are at the highest risk of vitamin D deficiency. Though some guidelines and social media consider people with 25 OHD levels below 75nmol/L vitamin D insufficient, this is based on no experimental evidence, and in our daily clinics it is better to consider only levels between 30 and 50nmol/L (modest) insufficiency.
