The introduction of laws banning smoking in public places and workplaces in Europe and North America has been quickly followed by large drops in rates of pre-term births and children attending hospital for asthma.

Medical Council CEO Caroline Spillane and Vice President Dr Audrey Dillon are due to appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection (ESP) this Wednesday.
