Charity promotes stem-cell research

Bookmark and Share

A new pro-medical research charity, the Irish Stem Cell Foundation, last week launched a new charter encouraging Irish clinicians, medical researchers, patient advocates and the public to join forces to make Ireland a better place for stem cell treatments, research and education and will call on the Irish Government to improve legislation in the area.

Dr Stephen Sullivan, Chief Scientific Officer of the Foundation, called for appropriate legislation to govern the development of stem cell research in Ireland: “Stem cells are the cornerstone of modern medical research and an essential part of seeking both the cures and high-end medical research jobs of the future.”
Dr Orla Hardiman, Consultant Neurologist at Beaumont Hospital, also participated in the Foundation’s launch. By working together, the Irish public will become more aware about ‘the scientific evidence for particular stem cell claims’, she said.
The charity’s objectives are:
l to establish a forum to promote, foster and exchange accurate information on the progress of stem cell research to all interested parties;
l to provide a focus on education in all areas of stem cell research and therapy;
l to accelerate stem cell research to cure the major illnesses of our generation;
l to benefit the broader community by raising awareness through dissemination of the research findings and information.
