UCC expands its pilot AED programme

AN initiative aimed at preventing sudden cardiac death has been expanded at University College Cork (UCC) following a successful pilot scheme.
The First Responder Auto-matic External Defibrillation (AED) Programme began in 2007 with 10 defibrillators and 40 volunteers at four locations. Within the next two months, a further 25 defibrillators and a group of 180 trained volunteers will be on hand at 25 more locations on and off campus.

Dr Michael Byrne, Head of Student Health Services, said the faster they provided defibrillation, the better.
“By having automatic external defibrillators available in a wide number of locations, with a large number of trained personnel willing to use them, we are making UCC a safer place for students, staff and visitors alike,” he said.
