A new society is being established to promote the increased use of the endoscopic approach to gynaecological surgery.
The Irish Gynaecological Endoscopy Society — an organisation for consultants and trainees — wants to bring the use of such methods in Ireland up to international levels.
According to Gynaecologist/Obstetrician Dr Cathy Burke, there has been insufficient development in this field in this country over the past decade. “As a group of professionals, many of whom have trained in leading gynaecological endoscopy centres worldwide, we wish to advance both basic and advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery nationally.
“This will be achieved through skills workshops, collaboration with colleagues, clinical research and an annual scientific meeting through which ideas, techniques and research findings can be shared,” she said.
The consultant at Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) added that there was strong interest in this concept amongst gynaecologists countrywide, as evidenced by the very large attendance of consultants and trainees from both sides of the border at a gynaecological endoscopic surgery study day held last November at CUMH.
An oversubscribed advanced laparoscopic skills training course also runs at the National Clinical Skills Centre in the Coombe Women’s Hospital. A constitution for the society is currently being drawn up, and all-Ireland audits of gynaecological endoscopy practice and training are also being prepared. A committee is expected to be elected in the coming months.
