Attempts to build a private burial ground in Donegal have failed because An Bord Pleanála said it would be prejudicial to public health, even though the Health Service Executive (HSE) said it had no such concerns.
Ulla and Wolfram Stumpf received planning permission from Donegal County Council for the development on their land in Shanagh. The applicants planned to bury about eight people and four pets in the graveyard.
However, the council’s decision was appealed to the Planning Appeals Board by a third party.
An Bord Pleanála’s inspector’s report stated: “The HSE are satisfied that the site is well-drained and yields no public health issues and have no objection to this development. However, on the day of my inspection the site was wet underfoot.”
