The Medical Council has taken the unusual step of recommending that all medical practitioners receive the swine flu vaccine when it becomes available.
Immunisation to prevent contraction of the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus is to “protect themselves, patients and colleagues when assessing, treating and vaccinating members of the general public.”
In a statement issued yesterday (September 24), the Council said doctors had to be aware of their professional accountability to control disease transmission amongst colleagues and patients.
While it has been shown that vaccination rates amongst healthcare staff are low, frontline workers must recognise the responsibility to provide a ‘high standard and safe level of professional care’, it stated.
The Council’s ‘Guide to Ethical Conduct and Behaviour’ states: “It is unethical for doctors who believe that they might be infected with a serious communicable disease not to seek appropriate medical advice. Colleagues who are consulted have a dual role. They must counsel and support the doctor concerned, but they must ensure that the doctor does not pose a risk to patients and others.”
In a pandemic such as this, or wherever it is necessary to protect the welfare of society, doctors may share information about patients with health protection staff, the Council added.
It reiterated its long-held advice that all doctors should have a GP of their own and should seek advice and help from another doctor rather than treating themselves.
Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan earlier this month described the vaccination programme as an ‘enormous and logistically complex undertaking for the health system’.
Speaking before the Oireachtas Committee on Health, Dr Holohan called on health professionals to come forward for the vaccine once it is offered, and for them and to “accept the responsibility they have to protect themselves in the first instance so that they will continue to be available for work and to ensure the patients they care for are not put at risk of picking up infection from an unvaccinated healthcare worker”.
The vaccination programme is likely to begin next month, subject to the vaccine being licensed. It is expected patients will receive two doses, although this advice may change following clinical trials.
Some 7.7 million doses have been acquired for use in the Irish population.
And any doctor who has ‘flu symptoms should stay at home. Until they are symptom free. If management refuse to get a locum or if they are otherwise pressured to attend work, then this should be viewed very seriously, and appropriate actions taken.
