Interest shown in satellite dialysis

Bookmark and Share

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has received interest from five dialysis providers for a Limerick satellite service, but has been criticised for wanting to locate the service too close to the Midwest Regional Hospital.
Irish Medical Times has learned that five service providers have responded to the HSE’s recent invitation to tender for a dialysis unit that is located next to the hospital in Limerick.

However, the Renal Strategy Review, which is finished but unpublished, was clear about the need to locate satellite services in places that reduced driving times for many dialysis patients who have long journeys to dialysis centres.
There is one service two miles from Beaumont Hospital, a service three miles from St Vincent’s University Hospital, and a service in Galway close to Merlin Park Hospital.
However, those service providers were already built before they won contracts with the HSE.
