Review to examine effect of closure

The HSE is conducting a clinical review of circumstances surrounding Dan McDonnell’s care and death, with specific reference to the impact the closure of the 24-hour ED at Ennis General Hospital had on his care. The coroner will conduct a formal investigation, if there is to be one.
The HSE said it is satisfied that all appropriate care was provided to Mr McDonnell by the advanced paramedic team and the ambulance personnel on duty. Mr McDonnell was pronounced dead at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital.

There are no plans at present to locate advanced paramedics in Kilrush ambulance station, the HSE said. Kilrush ambulance station is serviced by two ambulances, along with two nurses who are based in Ennistymon and Kilrush.
“The basis for the reconfiguration programme in the mid-west is to provide high-quality and safe services in accordance with the overwhelming weight of medical evidence,” said the HSE. “This has been borne out by the recently published HIQA report into Mid-Western Regional Hospital Ennis and the programme will be proceeding as planned.”
There has been an increased volume in attendance at the ED in Limerick.
The HSE is currently finalising a publicity campaign targeting homes in the Clare and north Tipperary area and this campaign will take place in the next two weeks.
