Two apples a day keeps doctor away

Bookmark and Share

Just two apples (300g) a day can help reduce cholesterol by as much as 10 per cent, EU-backed research has found.
Eight EU-funded projects on food quality and safety were presented last week (July 8) at a conference at the European Parliament, including the ISAFRUIT project, which also found that dipping apples and peaches in hot water at precise temperatures (20 seconds at 60 degrees for peaches; 40 seconds at 50-52 degrees for apples) can reduce brown rot by 80 per cent and remove E. coli and salmonella bacteria.

Co-ordinated from Denmark, the ISAFRUIT project includes two Irish members, Teagasc and Nature’s Best Ltd in Drogheda.
The conference in Brussels was part of EU Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn’s overall initiative to communicate better on the practical benefits that EU research is bringing to the ‘Europe 2020’ strategy in terms of improved quality of life and also as a key driver of economic growth and high-quality jobs.
