95% ‘Yes’ vote in NCHD ballot

NCHDs have voted almost unanimously in favour of the Labour Court recommendation on a new NCHD contract.

On completion of the count on Monday at IMO House, it emerged that 95 per cent of doctors were in favour of the deal.

IMO NCHD Chairman Dr Matt Sadlier was delighted with the result and told IMT that it represented a ‘fair deal’ for NCHDs.

He said it prioritised training and offered significantly better working conditions for doctors.

The agreement will not see any immediate compensation over the implementation of the European Working Time Directive, and the Court rejected the union’s claim for a salary increase of between 25-40 per cent to compensate them for lost earnings as a result of the Directive. However, the issue of the reduction in the requirement for overtime is due to be re-examined after the new contract has been in operation for a period of 12 months.

The Court also rejected claims for an unsocial hours payment, an annual operational allowance and changes in payments in respect of on-call, but did propose that the current overtime premium of time plus one-quarter be increased to time plus one-half, and that the contract as a whole should be reviewed again in 2014.

New contracts of employment for NCHDs will become effective from February 8 and issued throughout February.
