Soy product withdrawn over thyroid risk

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) has issued advice to doctors following the withdrawal of a soy milk product from the Irish market by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).

BonSoy has been withdrawn following the detection that it contained high levels of iodine. Doctors are advised to ask patients presenting with thyroid conditions about their consumption of BonSoy.

Up to eight adults in one practice in New South Wales in Australia have been diagnosed with thyroid conditions believed to be associated with the product. A newborn in Australia has also been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, after the mother drank BonSoy during pregnancy.

Adults who drink 30mls per day and children who drink 5mls a day are at risk of exceeding the safe upper limit for iodine intake.

The product is made in Japan and distributed in Australia, Ireland and many other countries. All products produced from January 1, 2009 have been withdrawn.
