Doctors obliged to get vaccinated - Council

The Medical Council’s new Ethical Guide has reiterated the need for all doctors to receive the swine flu vaccine when it is rolled out to healthcare professionals.

The Chairman of the Council’s Ethics Working Group, Dr Deirdre Madden, told Irish Medical Times that while the guide did not specifically refer to the current pandemic, the requirement to get vaccinated would come under the general obligation (paragraph 4) to act in the ‘best interests’ of one’s patients.

“One might interpret that in the context of a pandemic to mean that doctors should certainly consider – and the Council would encourage — getting vaccinated,” said Dr Madden.

The new guide also reiterates (Par 51.1) that if doctors think they might have a serious communicable disease, they ‘must seek appropriate medical advice without delay’.

In a statement issued late September, the Council said doctors had to control disease transmission amongst colleagues and patients.
