Pilot elder mediation service is launched

The ALZHEIMER Society of Ireland has launched a Dublin-based pilot elder mediation service for families living with dementia.

The Society believes elder mediation services could provide a new model to meet the needs of families dealing with stress and family conflict caused by the challenges of caring. An estimated one-third of calls to the Alzheimer National Helpline in the first half of 2009 were from people experiencing such difficulties.

Speaking at the second World Summit and Symposium on Elder Mediation in Dublin recently, CEO Maurice O’Connell said the focus of elder mediation was on dealing with the family’s concerns and issues while maintaining and strengthening relationships critical to the wellbeing of the older person.

“Typically, it involves many players — predominantly family members — who are concerned or affected by unexpected or unresolved events,” he said.
