Vitamin D and genes

Bookmark and Share

Clinical Update: Nutrition – There is no disputing that if a person has inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), there are circumstances where the patient will need nutritional support because they are malnourished.

However, basic science work and many animal studies have been done and it appears that there could also be a genetic element.
Trinity College Dublin is looking at the relationship between genetics and IBD. Inflammatory genes could predispose a person to IBD. Genetic work carried out at TCD in relation to this will soon be published.
Dr Maria O’Sullivan, Honorary Lecturer in Clinical Medicine at TCD, is looking at how changes in vitamin D-related genes might make a person more susceptible to developing Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
