How to provide general surgery in an environment of increased sub-specialisation was among the topics discussed at last weekend’s Sir Peter Freyer Memorial Lecture and Surgical Symposium.
The 34th annual conference took place in Galway.
Professor of Surgery at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), Michael Kerin will chair a discussion entitled ‘Requiem for general surgery: the changing face of surgical practice’.
“The issue with general surgery is that we still need to provide emergency department general surgery against a background of growing sub-specialisation. Increasingly, general surgeons are breast, endocrine, upper GI or lower GI specialists,” he said.
The question was how services need to be configured in future to deliver general surgery, he added. Panelists will also discuss how training should be provided in future.
The ‘Memorial Lecture’ was due to be delivered today by Dr Patrick Gullane, Wharton Chair in head and neck surgery at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.
Dr Gullane is a graduate of NUIG. “Dr Gullane has since embarked on a career in otolaryngology — head and neck surgery — and is recognised globally as a leader in his field,” said Prof Kerin.
The ‘State of the Art Lecture’ — entitled ‘Breast cancer and the cancer strategy — past, present and future’ — was due to be delivered tomorrow by consultant surgeon Professor Arnold Hill.
