A total of 52 patients were on Trolleys yesterday in the Emergency Department of Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital, according to the Irish Nurses Organisation’s (INO) Trolleywatch. The hospital disagreed, saying that at 8am yesterday, there were 44 people awaiting admission (either on trolleys or on chairs). There were also six patients in Beaumont’s admission’s lounge, the hospital said.
There is severe pressure on the Emergency Department because of Norovirus (there are currently visiting restrictions on five wards at Beaumont because of this Winter vomiting bug). Nurses have expressed serious concern about the ‘crippling effect’ of overcrowding in the A&E department at Beaumont.
“This level of overcrowding is persisting on an almost daily basis and is having a crippling effect on our members’ ability to deliver safe and quality patient care. Nurses in this department are totally exasperated by the continuous and mounting workload with no end in sight,” INO industrial relations officer, Eddie Mathews has said.
