Bookmark and Share

More than 60 per cent of cases in which children were admitted to psychiatric institutions this year involved them being put into adult units, according to the latest statistics.
Mental Health Commission figures from the beginning of January to the end of July this year show that out of the 218 instances of children being admitted, 136 were sent to adult psychiatric units. This means that 62 per cent of these type of admissions this year were to adult units.

The Commission’s figures continue to show that nearly all of the child admissions this year were voluntary — 216 out of a total of 218. In addition, more than six out of 10 admissions to psychiatric facilities were female children, with 133 instances of girls being admitted.
The statistics are also broken down to give the age of those admitted: 93 were 17 years old; 64 were 16 years; 22 were 15 years; 19 were 14 years; and 20 were 13 years or less.
