Psychiatric admissions delayed due to lack of specialist services

Bookmark and Share

Emergency admissions to psychiatric institutions are being delayed for several days because of the lack of such specialist services, Dr Siobhán Barry told the recent Irish Medical Organisation AGM.
The Dublin-based consultant psychiatrist said that there is only one facility in Ireland to assist with such admissions and it is based in Naas, Co Kildare. She said: “There is often several days’ delay between the central assisted admissions facility unleashing its powers from Naas and actually assisting in the admission.”

Dr Barry explained to Irish Medical Times that the nurses based at the Naas facility assist in admissions of people to psychiatric institutions when those individuals are living in the family home and need to be transferred into care.
The AGM passed a motion calling on the Mental Health Commission and the Health Service Executive to work together to remedy the matter.
