A new recycling initiative is hoping to raise half a million euro for cancer research at St James’s Hospital. Fonemenders, a mobile phone repair chain in Ireland, will recycle old phone here and sell them in overseas markets.
Here’s the press release: Fonemenders, Ireland’s leading mobile phone repair chain, has entered into a commercial partnership with cancer prevention and treatment charity, CROSS, which aims to raise up to €500,000 for cancer research in Ireland. The partnership has been endorsed by Leinster and Argentina rugby star, Felipe Contepomi. Dr. Contepomi is a qualified doctor and has been a patron of CROSS for the last year.
The initiative was launched in St. Michael’s College, in Dublin. Students from the school plan to host a sponsored rugby place kicking competition – ‘Kick for Cross’ – where, instead of soliciting monetary sponsorship, pupils will gather damaged or irreparable mobile phones, to be passed on to Fonemenders for recycling.
Under the terms of the partnership, Fonemenders will recycle permanently damaged or irreparable mobile phones gathered from a number of locations, including St. James’ Hospital and Trinity College. The components of the damaged phones that are still in good order will be sold into emerging markets, where they will be reassembled and sold by local traders.
