Next Minister for Health?

The opinion poll in today’s Irish Times is bad news for Bertie Ahern and suggests he won’t be forming the next Government.
So if there is a Fine Gael-Labour coalition in power who will be the next Minister for Health?
If Fine Gael want the portfolio, Wexford GP Liam Twomey would seem an obvious candidate. He’s done a reasonably good job as the party’s health spokesman, but it’s a big step up for a relatively inexperienced politician.
If Enda Kenny is looking for a safe pair of hands, Richard Bruton would seem an obvious candidate and Bernard Allen might also fancy his chances of reforming Hawkins House. Paul McGrath could be a lively outsider if you are looking for odds from the bookies
Liz McManus will be the leading candidate for Labour, but it’s a tough brief and Pat Rabbitte might decide to give the job to a more senior member of the party like Mary Upton, Joe Costello, Joan Burton, Roisin Shortall or Brendan Howlin who did the job before for a brief period from 1993-94. Other strong candidates would be Eamon Gilmore and Jan O’Sullivan but given that a Labour Health Minister would have to take some tough financial decisions and take on the unions, does Rabbitte want the grief of the brief?
Of course, the polls might be wrong and Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats could be back in power after the election.
In that event, Minister for Children Brian Lenihan could be ready to take the step up to a senior position in the Cabinet.
Anyway the voters will decide, so roll-on polling day and if any of the candidates listed above replace Mary Harney, remember where you read it first.
