Most IMT readers consider professional competence an ‘over-regulation’

By Pat Kelly. IMT’s latest live online poll shows that the majority of readers believe the Medical Council’s professional competence scheme is a step too far in terms of regulating the profession.

The Irish Medical Times poll, which was live for one week on the IMT home page (www.imt.ie), attracted 112 votes (readers were restricted to one vote per person). Seventy-three of these votes, representing 65 per cent of the total, answered ‘yes’ to the question, ‘Is the Medical Council’s professional competence (PC) scheme an over-regulation of the profession?’

A total of 39 voters disagreed, which translated as 35 per cent of the total. The results serve as an indication of the medical profession’s overall attitude to the Council’s PC scheme and emphasise the split in opinion among the medical community on the issue.

IMT readers can now make their opinions known on the new online poll, which poses the question: ‘Is downgrading Roscommon Hospital a political disaster for Dr James Reilly?’

The results will be published on the IMT home page and in the Irish Medical Times e-Newsletter.
