By Pat Kelly. Of all the challenges facing Dr James Reilly and his team, IMT readers have decided that restructuring or abolishing the HSE is the most urgent.
The poll, which posed the question: ‘What should be the new Government’s top two priorities in terms of the health service?’ went live online for readers of IMT on March 2 of this year.
The answer options were: 1) Tackling hospital waiting list backlogs; 2) Restructuring and/or dismantling the HSE; 3) Emergency Department waiting times; 4) A new GMS GP contract; and 5) Developing primary care centres/teams across the country.
Users were allowed to choose two answers and indicate their priority in terms of what the Government needs to most urgently address. A total of 766 votes were cast by 496 users, with ‘Restructuring and/or dismantling the HSE’ garnering 208 votes, or 42 per cent of the votes cast.
‘Developing primary care teams/centres across the country’ was shown to be the next highest priority, with 194 votes, or 39 per cent of the total.
Readers chose ‘Tackling hospital waiting list backlogs’ as the next most urgent issue, with 163 votes cast, representing 33 per cent of the total.
Next in terms of preference was ‘Emergency department waiting times’, with 25 per cent of the total, translated as 124 votes. Only 16 per cent of IMT readers voted for ‘A new GMS GP contract’ as their priority, representing 77 votes cast.
IMT readers can now have their say in a new poll at www.imt.ie, which asks the question: ‘Should NCHDs be compelled to serve at least six months in an emergency department as part of their medical experience, in order to partly repay the State for their training?’
