The Medical Council, which has recently taken it upon itself to be more open as it strives to enhance accountability in its statutory role to protect patients, has just developed a new initiative designed to empower younger, more tech savvy patients — its first videocast.
The videocast, which went online last week, features Medical Council President, Prof Kieran Murphy, and Chair of the Medical Council’s Ethics Committee, Dr Deirdre Madden, taking viewers through the 7th edition of the Guide to Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Medical Practitioners.
Prof Murphy, who has acknowledged the Council was sometimes perceived as being ‘closed’ but put this down to legal strictures given its regulatory role, said the Council is committed to sharing information with patients about their rights and about the responsibilities of doctors, within these constraints.
“This form of communication is new to Council and, in bringing this information to the public, it is hoped to provide clarity to a wider audience.
“Creating greater awareness of its activities will help the Council to protect the public by promoting and ensuring the highest professional standards among doctors,” the Council stated.
